I had sex about two weeks before I thought I ovulating. I then got scared that my husband and I may be pregnant, so I went to the doctor and set up an appointment to get an IUD. The midwife who saw me asked me when I had sex, and didn't even bother to do a test. She said "well then so you aren't pregnant". I can't help but wonder if you have sex a week after your period, there must be SOME chance. I worry about what will happen if I am pregnant and they go in there to insert the birth control. I just wonder because lately I've had serious pain (with a condition I have I WOULD have pain if I was pregnant), I've had a terrible taste in my mouth all the time, and I'm tired as can be! It could all be nothing, but I just wonder. Is it really not possible to have sex a week after your period and get pregnant?

That midwife is a doofus. You can ovulate and get pregnant at any point during your cycle, including while you are menstruating. Usually, women follow a cycle: the ovulate about ten days before the onset of their periods, but the operative word here is USUALLY. You can get pregnant at any time so you should always be protected.

I don't think its possible. Getting pregnant is actually quite difficult and quite a miracle when it happens because that egg has to go through a lot to become a baby. A week after your period (after day ONE of your period) the lining in your uterus is thin and not really producing any of the fertile fluids, so its not really good for implantation. Also there is mucus in your cervix that is pretty thick at that stage, kind of like a plug stopping entry of any adventurous sperm. So i'd say its really really really unlikely.

If however you are pregnant and you have an iud inserted, the egg will simply remove itself from the wall and spontaneously abort - like in a menstrual cycle. Babies don't like to grow when there is something foreign in your uterus.

Every one is different. Usually, ppl ovulate 14 days after hte start of their last period. If you are concerned, buy a home pregnancy test and do it before you get it inserted...

Better to be safe than sorry :)

You ovulate approx 14 days past day 1 of your period.

My doctor told me that the week after your period is safer. Not fool proof, but just safer.
