mail for someone in your family who died?after a family member died the hospital sent her a 8,000 bill for ER treatment. I called them and said she is deceased they told me they would keep sending bills unless I sent them a copy of the death certificate. Mind you she died in their hospital. I said go ahead waste your stamps and manpower because I am not sending you anything. Hospitals always say they have so much over head, yeah, waste time etc sending bills to someone you know is deceased. please no jokes as this really happened. Just wonder if anyone has been through something similar. thanks bless you

You still need to show the death certificate, they are using billing and billing needs you to proof the death happen. Plus, you need to let all their business accounts, bills, bank know. If they don't have any other names on their bank accounts, the accounts will be frozen until the estate is settled. Do not forge their signature ever, even if you need to sign something, they will charge you once they realize the person was dead at the time the paper was signed.
If alot of bills and you are confused, try legal aid or a bereavement group. The group leaders should be able to help with the right people and things to do. Have the estate paid off all outstanding debts while in probate, the executor should be able to do that.

Yes. With my mother-in-law. They actually think they can scare you into paying the bills. Next one that comes, fill out the change of address form on the back and send it in. Let some poor sap get the bills.

yeah after my mom died we got a bill from her primary doc who saw her 3 days before she died, but they had enough "class" to address it to "the estate"...if the bills aren't covered through insurance/medicare they can keep sending then and they may end up going to a collection agency..about a year after she died she got a jury duty summons which we didn't bother to send back indicating she had died,we actually wanted to see if the threats about the sheriff coming to get you for not reporting were true, they never showed

After my Dad died, my Mom had a ton of bills to pay for, hospital, doctors, etc...even though my Dad had some medicare it didn't pay for everything......I thought it was funny, too, that one of the doctors offices actually called to reschedule a doctors appointment that my Dad was suppose to go to about a month after his death.....his doctor was well aware he had passed, but I guess he forgot to inform his office. Sorry for your loss.

DAMN, call the presedent or CEO of the hospital and tell him how his hospital is harassing you for something they should already know. Tell him how it is reopening the wound everytime they send you something in the mail. It will stop then, TRUST me.

This has never happened to me, but my heart goes out to you!

Yeah, I have. My dad.

You can mark it addressee deceased, and put it back in the mail. They have to see it when it comes back. It may not stop the waste, but the Post Office sometimes will stop delivering things with that name on them, if you file with them.

You may need to make several copies of the death certificate. Companies need them to close files, to make payments to beneficiaries, etc.
