The song is about Isaac's mentoring to a teen who was deep into drugs and alcohol who really just needed to have someone help him out. Isaac says most people would come to him more as an enemy, like they would quit speaking to him if he didn't clean up his act, but all the guy really ever wanted was for someone to come to him as a friend and try to help him more, but he never really got that. So Isaac wrote the song about what the guy wanted and how Isaac would want someone to approach him if he were doing something wrong. He tells the entire story on the deluxe cd/dvd.
the name came from a sign Isaac saw at a swimming pool or something that gave procedures on how to do cpr on a drowning person... how to save their life

i found this article.. According to lead singer and songwriter Isaac Slade, the song was composed and influenced by his experience while working as a mentor at a camp for troubled teens: “ One of the kids I was paired up with was a musician. Here I was, a protected suburbanite, and he was just 17 and had all these problems. And no one could write a manual on how to save him. ” Slade claims that the song is about all of the people that tried to reach out to the boy but were unsuccessful. As Slade says in an interview, the boy's friends and family approached him by saying, "Quit [the problem behavior] or I won't talk to you again," but all he needed was some support. The verses of the song describe an attempt by an adult to confront a troubled teen. In the chorus, the singer laments that he himself was unable to save a friend because he did not know how. While this was the original intent of the song, the band has opened the song to interpretation. They created a website where fans were welcome to submit music videos they had made for the song. This arose from the response that Slade got from the song:[1] “ I got a lot of e-mails about it (...) One kid died in a car accident, and I guess it had been the last song he downloaded from his computer. They played it at his funeral, and some of his friends got Save a life tattooed on their arms. The response has been overwhelming.

One of the most common questions spouses ask when confronting a marriage crisis is this: How can I save my marriage if my partner doesn't want to help find a solution? How do I succeed I am trying to save my marriage on my own? Learn here https://tr.im/LktmN

It is a typical enough story: one partner leaves, the other stays. One remains 'in love', the other is uncertain. Whatever it is that has caused a couple to be apart, the one person who remains bears the prospect, fear, doubt, desire, hope of saving his or her marriage' alone.

hey i got this answer off www.songmeanings.net

hope it helps

while i know this song is about the lead singer helping a drug addicted teen, when i first heard it i thought it was about his relationship with a girl, from her point of veiw. she was saying she needed to talk to the guy, about some issues they had. and he didnt like talking, and she wonders what the big deal is, its just a talk. and the guy, hes to scared to talk about anything, and he cant handle talking through things, hes really uncomfortable. but there are things that NEED to be sorted out, and she knows it and she needs to talk with him. but he wont listen, and he only gets upset, nervous and mad when she tries to talk, so she begins to wonder why she bothered at all with him. then they fight, or break up, and shes really upset, because she lost a really good freind somewhere in all the talking and yelling. and if she could have she would have done anything (stayed up all night) to fix things for him or between them. the rest of the song could continue to describe thier fight, her giving him a choice to stay or leave. its like someone giving advice to a girl on how to confront him about the things bothering her about the relationship. that she knows best, and he needs to listen, and she should lay down what she thinks is wrong, and really hope it will sink in. but then he beings to raise his voice, and hes not understanding, hes getting mad, just like she knew he would. and she finally offers up a choice, to cut off contact and leave, or break with what hes followed and listen to her, come back to her. and he chooses to leave. he says he just isnt the same, instead of admitting to being wrong, and treating her badly at times. so its over, and she wonders why she wasted her time. still shes upset because she and he were really good freinds, and she lost him. and she would have done anything to fix it, if only shed known how. yeah story of my life!! great song.
