The community community were referred to as Indians for the reason that the Christopher Columbus suggestion he had reached India. So i think you could refer to them as Indian whenever you opt for, only be particular persons be responsive to which Indians you're speaking about. In some languages there are 2 mind-blowing words for Indian Indians and local American Indians. I mean they are fairly an similar besides the undeniable fact that only the pronunciation is slightly particular.

When referring to the people who were in the Americas before the Europeans showed up, the word 'Indian' is a mis-nomer.

Columbas was wrong, he did NOT reach India.

'Native American' is the term that applies, as none of those people are from India (which is what 'Indian' means).

Apparently, Canadians refer to them as 'First Nation' (which I didn't know, as I'm from the US).

What is it, exactly, that you are unclear about?

Everyone who lives in the American continents is American -- though we in the US tend to use the term to refer to ourselves, as we don't have a namey name for ourselves.

(I know some Canadians refer to us as being "south of the border" but that could mean everyone in Latin America, too.)
