I recently bought Microsoft FSX for the PC, but I don't have a joystick or a controller that works so I have to use the keyboard. But it is very hard using the keyboard. Do you have any tips to help my plane not crash when I try to turn or land using the keyboard?

As an avid flight simmer, I can tell you its really hard to fly using keyboard commands for controlling ailerons, rudders, and elevators. Just get your self a cheap joystick. It will save you alot of frustration in the long run.

I don't know of anyone that can fly with a keyboard, they all use a joystick. You might try, if the game will let you, binding the nose up/down and ailerons to bank left/right to the mouse. It should be a little more precise that tapping on the keys, especially when trying to land. If you have a mouse wheel, try to bind the throttle to it for more precise control over the throttle.

For understanding the basics of how to fly around it's good. As far as going from the simulator to a 172 at your local airport, it isn't going to help you all that much. That being said, I find flight simulator extremely helpful for practicing instrument maneuvers. It will really help get your procedures down and improve your approaches as well, as you learn to scan the instruments better.
