I received a recorded dvd from the place i got my baby's sonogram at. I'm trying to send it to my family and friends so they can see it, too but i don't know how to change the file extension. When I go on My Computer and open the file, 3 files come up and they're labeled VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, and VIDEO_TS.VOB. I can't send these to anyone on their email or put it up on my fotki.com account because they can't read those files that make up the video. Can anyone help?

Hey there,

This is what we did for our iPod, but you can change them to any format you would like.

Here is a good article and download area on how to do this. Once you do it the first time, you will "get it" and move on to better things. Read all 3 articles. You do not need the merge program unless you are taking multiple DVD's and putting them into on movie. I would suggest you skip the merge part and go back after you did one successfully. READ THE DIRECTIONS! It will not work properly without setting certain parameters outlined in this article.

I started with DVD Decrypter (free) and Videora (free). It is simple and the instructions on the above web site work.

I moved on to other programs as I got better.

This program will copy the DVDs to your computer and remove the copyright protection. They also have an upgrade that lets you convert the movies to your iPod or PSP but that part costs a couple of bucks.

This program is one of the best encoders available. You can set all kinds of settings for codecs, size, and quality. It even has the option to run in a master and slave mode where multiple computers can work on projects to encode your movies faster.

One word of caution, DRIVE SPACE. My son filled up my entire server doing his movies. In a matter of a day he managed to build an almost 100Gig library. He bought me a 300 gig hard drive to store his movies. He has 150 Gig filled; about 50 movies.

.VOB = DVD video file
.IFO = DVD information (menus and such)
I forgot what .BUP was.

Anyway, theres programs on the net that you can download and use to convert dvd files to mpg or whatever you want. Search "convert dvd movie to mpeg" or whatever you want the file type to be.

Good luck and congrats!

Ohh and yeah... DVD decryption of copyrighted material is illegal so you might want to be careful about that but seeing how its not a commercial dvd but rather one from the hospital, I doubt you'll have to worry about that.
