Bayonne has improved over the years, If it's nice enough for your relative to live there, it'll be nice enough for you to visit.
Just go and enjoy the visit

All of NJ is a dump. Anyway, if its family tough it out

Why not? You can take the train to visit somewhere else during the day and come back to sleep....if it's really that bad.
