Some of the auditions are just so bad! They are hilarious! And some are just so bad that you almost thing they are just acting in the hope that they get some air time.
Are some of these people just pretending to be bad?

Absolutely! It's amazing what some people would take for having their 15 minutes of fame... even being humiliated on national television by the judges and guest stars. The show producers haven't cared so far, because the "loser-that-we-can-make-fun-of/mocking-patronizing-judges" is always a winning combo for good TV. But it is becoming more and more obvious every year and the public is not stupid. Reality shows are good and successful when they are that: real.

They're not just intentionally bad, but the producers have put them there for the "shock and laughter value". So obviously they're "planted" intentionally.

yeah, i think that's so too. one guy, the one who wore a cowboy's outfit, sucked so bad, i couldn't tell that he had started singing.
