I did a similar calculation with my class using a mole of M&M's. This quantity of M&M's would cover the continental USA to a height of 55 miles.

By the way, You need the volume of the penny for your question, not its mass. Put some pennies in water and measure the volume by displacement.

One mole of pennies is say 10^23 molecules. What is the molecular weight of a penny?

Earth 10^27 what - not moles (diameter? diameter?) what are the units - need more info....
