Kohl (kol), which means to "brighten the eyes" in Arabic, is a mixture of soot and other ingredients, used by Egyptian and other Asian women and, to a lesser extent, men to darken the eyelids. Kohl has been worn traditionally as far back as the Bronze Age. Kohl was originally used as protection against eye ailments. Darkening around the eyelids also provided relief from the glare of the sun.

If you are in the US then Kohl is only a reference to the color of the makeup. The FDA has banned the use of real Kohl as it contains lead. In other countries it is still used however. Kohl is most commonly found in eyeliner and eye shadows.
Here is the FDA website with info regarding Kohl

Kohl is in eyeliner. It makes the eyeliner go on super smooth and it gives off a smudge effect if you do it right. you know the color example on the outside of the eyeliner or wutever? well kohl makes it exactly the color it says it is.
