One of our cats recently became hyperthyroid. Too much thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone contains iodine. So we took her to a specialized veterinary practice where they do nuclear medicine. They gave her a shot of radioactive iodide-131. This will migrate to her thyroid gland and destroy enough tissue so that she'll have normal thyroid activity. They do the same thing for humans, both thyroid gland tumors and hyperthyroid activity.

Humans get radioactive "seeds" implanted for prostate cancer therapy.
