Come on, anyone have a real answer? Do studios pay a flat rate per year, per film, or each time they submit a film (if it's submitted multiple times)? And how much is it each time? I'm going to make a starting guess and someone else can help me out: $5000 per movie + $2500 to resubmit.

I know it's not required, I just want to know the cost to voluntarily submit a movie to the MPAA.

By the way, it's bullshit that a rating is voluntary. Spend $100mm on a movie and not rate it? It will be worthless.

The movie ratings system is a voluntary system operated by the MPAA and the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO). The ratings are given by a board of parents who comprise the Classification and Rating Administration (CARA). CARA?s Board members view each film and, after a group discussion, vote on its rating. The ratings are intended to provide parents with advance information so they can decide for themselves which films are appropriate for viewing by their own children. The Board uses the same criteria as any parent making a judgment ? theme, language, violence, nudity, sex and drug use are among content areas considered in the decision-making process.

While I did a lot of searching I could not find the price for submitting a movie for a rating but i can tell you that

IT IS NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE A MOVIE RATED

you can pitch your movie to theaters without a rating, bigger theaters aren't likely to show the movie because it has no rating,

The MPAA rating system is OPTIONAL. Theaters can admit anyone into whatever movie they want (with the exception of NC-17) as long as they have the money for a ticket. Also if you want to buy a R rated movie at Walmart and you are under 18, legally speaking you can, but Walmart has a policy that it wont sell R movies to "kids" and choose to hide behind the MPAA.
