Can you tell me what you need to buy to play XBOX 360 with other people. I'm not sure if the correct term is "live" or "online"

You need high speed internet connection (DSL, cable modem). You don't need to buy the ethernet cable. That's provided when you bought the 360.
I suggest you get a router because it makes connecting to the internet a lot easier. With a router, you don't need to configure the 360, you just plug and play. Besides, I don't think you want to plug and unplug cables as you switch from 360 to the PC.
You also need to buy an X-Box Live kit if you want to go online and play against other people. I heard that you need a credit card even if you got the time card. I don't know if you do or not need a credit card because I used my credit card for XBL.
Live refers to X-Box Live in this case. Online is when you go on the internet. When you want to play against other people on XBL, use Live.

You will need an internet connection. High speed connection like DSL or Cable works best. For ethernet connection you will need a router and a ethernet cable. For wireless connection you'll need a wireless router and a wireless adpater for the xbox 360. You can get these at any electronic retail stores like Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart,.....After everything is connected you can sign up at xbox live to get your gamertag and that's it. Have Fun.

Provided you have a broadband internet connection, you will require a router (assuming you don't have one), and an ethernet cable to connect the XBox to the router. Then, simply sign up for a gamertag on xbox live, and enjoy!
