Because they are petty and don't have lives!
I worked at a company once where I was the focus of attention of my co-workers, who scrutinized my car, clothes, shoes, hair, boyfriend, etc.
It's pretty sad and annoying but I ignored them.

you must work where i work these 2 new girls talk about everyone and are very nosy they make me sick they are lazy and it seems like no one notices but me i'm so fed up i have been there 9 years and them 6 months and they are the laziest B***** and i have learned to ignore them if the work isn't out in time i dont even care any more just go to work do your thing and go home thats what i do good luck but they are every where .

Because, sadly, a lot of them combine their social life with their work life and step over the line with co-workers.
I've gotten snide comments about being in my 30s and not having kids, about only being in a relationship and not married, about my finances (which I never discuss), and my fitness (I work out).
It seems to stem from a combination of lonliness and self doubt.
