to be honest I think a lot of it has to do with the amount of emphasis/pressure the school/teacher puts on them. if you've done well throughout the semester the final shouldn't be to bad, if you've been struggling then hate to say it but it's going to be harder, but that doesn't mean it's too late to ask for help.
the best advice I can give you is to make sure you schedule time for recreation. if you try to sit and study for 4-5+ hours at a time you're not going to retain the information very well. if you spend about 1-2 hours studying and then take a 30-45 min break before hitting the books you'll find you're not only less stressed but better able to retain the information.
it's also important to get plenty of sleep, especially before the exam. also try to eat something before you take the test. this will help you keep your mind focused on the exam and not your stomach.
another thing that can help is if you listen to some type of music while you study (unless you find it too distracting). music can help you relax and has also been shown to help people retain information better.
when you take breaks from studying it's important that you do something to relax and not think about studying. physical activity is also good, because not only can it help you relax but it will also increase the blood flow to your brain.
hope this helps and good luck with your exams.

They are hard because when you cram all of your studying into one night during your first semester when you have tests you dont remember well. If you would to spread out your studying during a semester you would be more likely to remember stuff from earlier in the year.
