It is used in knitting. When you want to make a rib look or if you want a flat appearance one row is knitted and the row back uses the (pearl) purl stitch.

It is actually spelled "purl". If you were making something you could knit or purl it. They are both very similar to each other and both very easy to do.

If you are just learning how to knit and purl I would suggest buying yarn from Lion Brand. They make a really bulky yarn, and it's great for beginners. That is what I made my first scarf out of and it came out great. Very thick and warm. Best of luck!
