Well, to different people, music can be helpful or very distracting to them. I think that music, not loud music can help you relax and concentrate even more and even maybe help you memorize things for you tests.
I think that music is helpful, but to other people, it can be different.

My sons teacher in 3rd grade did an experiment. Playing classical music in the background while the kids did their work, alternating weeks.

The weeks where the music played, the kids were able to do more problems with higher accuracy.

I think that says that not all music is bad. And classical music seems to help.

I find that listening to music that contains words while I am studying provides a distraction. When I play classical music, I concentrate more and don't even consciously hear it most of the time.

Having taken several college courses the past year, I can honestly say, I was #1 or 2 in the class every time.

yes & No. Scientifcally it is proven listening to music makes mind relax(not hard rock or metallic, only country, classical,etc..) also helps in plants grow. Not always you listen to music, may be when you do some problematic subjects like math or accounts something like. Or if you feel stressed out after studying a while, you can listen to music to relax, not during studying theory subjects or concepts. So the answer is YES as well as NO.

It might be bad for some people, but I know that at least with reading, whenever I hear a song from enya, I remember Pride and Prejudice which I read while listening to enya.
Nursery rhymes teach little children, and the kids remember the rhymes because they sing them.
Personally, I think music helps you relax and concentrate better, though not if its loud or metal music, I don't know how anybody can concentrate with that blasting in their ears.

I don't think it's bad to listen to music while doing homework as long as the music isn't loud. If the music distracts you from your homework then it's bad.

I have heard of studies proving that listening to music while doing homework just adds to the stress of it. I have heard that listening to classical music is good while doing hw....but who wants to listen to classical music?!

It is bad to listen to music while reading and doing homework.Of course i accept that listening to music makes every one to feel relaxed. But while doing homework you have to recollect the lessons taught to you and apply your mind to do homework.you may listen to music before doing your homework so that you become relaxed.if you do both actions at same time you may loose your concentration.

it really depends on the person. for some people they can't concentrate unless they're in complete silence, for others (like myself) they can't concentrate unless there is some type of background noise. i don't know if it will help your memory but i do know that it did for me. if there was something that i had difficulty remembering i would try to relate it to a song that i knew well or something i had seen on t.v. (used to drive my English teacher nuts because i watched wishbone and it helped me remember the books we were reading better)
so the answer is, if you find having music playing in the background helpful use it, if it prevents you from concentrating don't
hope that helps
