I just rented the dvd "Man on the Moon" and they seemed to be saying at the end of the movie that Andy Kaufman faked his own death....!?!?! So that was 20 years ago... so is he dead or alive?And why would he fake his own death? I don't get it.

Yes, Andy Kaufman is dead. Died May 16,1984 from renal failure.
People say that Mr. Kaufman might have faked his death, because he has no social security death listing, and he said would fake his death if he could, but it's just rumors like Elvis.

As intelligent as he was once. I real believe that even though he had strategies of faking his own loss of life that he did not. Good did not have time too. Considering he absolutely passed away. Shame too He used to be a sort, humorous, & passionate man. Wouldn't it be notable if all of a sudden he resurfaced & used to be like *hey* i might be in AWE! But on account that 9 outta 10.. I must say R.I.P Andy!!

Wow, crappy Jim Carey movie, and no, Andy Kauffman is not alive, he faked suicide to defer his crazed fans, but really died in the late 80's.
