We have no children. We do own property in California where my husband lives. I am currently living in Idaho. There is really no fighting over things, but I will need to get my own car insurance and other various things. I just want to make sure my bases are covered when the end comes.

Talk to a lawyer about what you are entitled to. Make sure all property and debt is fairly divided and that it is clear in the papers who is responsible for what credit cards etc.. Make sure that all the utilities are in the name of the person using them. Get your own insurance for your car and the place you live, even if you just rent. Check with the credit reporting bureaus and make sure all information is correct so that you will be able to make purchases and open accounts in your name with no nasty surprises. Change the beneficiaries on all insurance policies, pensions etc. unless the court orders differently. Since you were married for so long, you may still have a claim on his pension and vice versa.Open your own checking and savings accounts.

And don't forget to take care of yourself physically and emotionally. Go take a class, join a gym, spend time with friends, take up or renew hobbies. Good luck!

You need to focus on what it is going to take to make you happy Now. You don't say if this something you wanted but I hope so as it is happening. The best way to part is on the friendly terms you mention with no quarreling. Single life after 20yrs of marriage can be very rewarding. You don't say if you work, if you do that is great. If you need support their are singles support groups all over. It is going to seem strange at first to think of yourself as single but you will adjust with ease. Good luck

Start getting your own bank accounts insurance and credit cards NOW. Make sure you have your life covered and don't forget to change your beneficiaries on life insurance and 401 k etc.
