YES its definitely unusual and unless the books were porn or something unsavoury I think it would also be in the cruel league as books are vital to our daily lives either as a newspaper, reference material, schoolbooks, or a novel for a leisurely read. Punishment is about taking away privileges and books are pretty much a necessity of daily life.

If the ban is some sort of unsavoury material ok, but if it is on normal literature then I would suggest some other form of punishment would be more appropriate, as by taking away books for such a LONG period you are not just taking away a privilege but you are also taking away a RIGHT.

I don't know about "cruel and unusual" but I would say it's stupid. Depending, of course, on the type of book being prohibited. Not all books are created equal. If one is sentenced to read good quality literature and no trash for a month, that doesn't sound like punishment. No books at all, that's punishment, and stupid.

I love to read hot, steamy romance novels so you bet it would be punishment. Also cruel and unusual because then I would have to pay attention to my old man and that's just cruel.
