My son never nursed longer than 5 minutes after we figured out the whole latch thing. And he was 20lbs at 4 months.

COUNT DIAPERS, if you are really paranoid weigh them (what goes in must come out, more or less). It isn't HOW LONG that it is important, or even how often.

The only thing you should be concerned with is adequate weight gain and pooping and peeing enough.

Does he have jaundice? Sometimes this makes it harder to keep them awake.

Ideas for you -
- undress him
- change his diaper and try again
- tickle his feet
- rub little circles on his forehead, right between the eyes
talk to him
- turn the lights down lower - young babies don't like bright lights and will close their eyes to shut it out....then they fall asleep
- wipe his face and neck with a cool cloth
- lay him in your lap and help him do gentle "baby sit ups" to stimulate him
- make sure you are supporting the weight of your breast and it's not pulling down on his chin
- burp him and switch positions
- try doing breast compressions while nursing to help keep the flow of milk coming
- switch breasts as soon as the baby begins to lose interest in active nursing, this *may* need to be done every 30 to 60 seconds at first (the first few times you do it). You should begin to see a difference within a couple days of doing this
- nurse in the football hold as opposed to cradle hold - it's a little less "cuddly" and sleep-inducing

This is going to sound odd, but to keep my babies awake, I'd make a long kissing noise-high pitched. That still wakes them up. I pucker up like a kiss and suck in air to make the noise until they woke up. Works like a charm for my kids--my youngest is three months old and on the occassion that she falls asleep while feeding, I do it.

My son used to do that and it drove me crazy. A lactation consultant will tell you many of the same things that people have already written.

While it is not the professional answer, I personally would let my son sleep and suck. After a short time I would take him off the breast and he obviously got milk in his sleep (formerly full breast was soft at the end)

It's pretty common for newborns to fall asleep quickly at the breast. Here is a link with some tips on waking a sleepy baby.

It is very hard to keep a breastfed baby from falling to sleep while nursing.I breastfed all four of mine and I learned that when they start to cry dont stick a boob in thier mouth right away talk to them sing to them anything at first than feed them this way you can see interact with them besides putting a boob in their mouth

mine youngest daughter did the same thing... the only way we could wake her up was to take all her clothes off and lay her in the middle of the room and she would get cold and wake up... she would sleep like 6 hrs when she was a 1 wk old.. we ended having to switch to formula bcuz breast feeding would just put her to sleep.. but dr was the one who gave us the idea of taking her clothes off and laying her in the middle of the room..... good luck :-)

I switch to the other side... or tap his feet kinda hard...that is frustrating.. cause they fall asleep still hungry and wake up and want to eat every hour

be very careful with this. my son did the same thing when he was that little. i couldn't keep him awake to breastfeed for anything. turns out he was jaundice and so dehydrated that he had to be hospitalized.
