Tim whatshisname came up with the World Wide Web, but NOT the Internet. The Internet was started by the Department of Defense and somewhere in there ARPANET comes into play... In fact they may have worked together or something like that...

Then you (and I) owe your thanks to Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the "Internet" as we know it today to store information. I can't remember the original program name...Inquire, perhaps?
The important thing is, Tim Berners-Lee moved on to found the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium), which essentialy sets rules for the Internet.
