There's nothing wrong with wanting to donate your kidney; I think it's a very noble thing to do. You might want to talk with a doctor, though, to find out the potential health ramifications for you. Make sure that you are completely informed of the potential risks.

I'm a paramedic, and while I enjoy my job greatly, it's nothing like what you see on TV. Most of the time, you wonder if you are really helping anyone at all, since the majority of your patients don't even need an ambulance, much less a paramedic's services. The patients that you actually help are few and far in between, but they make the job worth it for me. It would be a good idea to ride along with a paramedic crew just to make sure that this job is for you. That way you'll know exactly what you are getting yourself into.

And as far as telling your parents about your desire to donate your kidney, I'd wait until it was a certainty. That way they wouldn't get worried over nothing. There's no sense in telling them first, then finding out you aren't a good candidate. Once you are certain that you are eligible, then sit them down and gently tell them that you feel this is the right thing for you to do. I'm sure they will be upset initially, but they will understand if you give them some time to think about it.

Hope this helps...

You are right you should tell your parents but I think you have to be a certain age to be able to donate a kidney unless you are donating to a family member, so I would call the local hospital and check into it and see. There is nothing wrong with what you want to do, it just may be that you are still to young is all, however you are not to young to donate blood and plasma. My sons life was saved because people donate blood and plasma every day, so if you can't donate a kidney at least you can donate blood and plasma.

I wouldn't just come right out and say that you had already decided to donate but that it was something that you thought you might like to consider some day.

Umm, why the heck would you want to donate a kidney! You are only 18. Grow up a bit more and think about this yourself.

I think its wonderful that you want to help ppl, but you really need to talk to your parents about it. Legally you are able to make your own decisions but it would be nice to talk to them before you make a big decision like that.

Why don't you do it when you die...then you can donate everything!!! I think you need some serious help, that's a pretty silly thing. I mean why not an arm or something? What are you? Frankenstein?
