There are many terms both "official" and slang that you might want to brush up on. Wikipedia has an explanation for most of the terms.

First you'll probably want to know the positions (there are 5 and they are known by their number like you may hear someone say he plays "the one" or he's the "two":

(1)Point Guard - Bassically it's the guy that dribbles the ball and distributes to other players. He's like the playmaker. He creates the "tempo" getting the fast break going and directing the other players to their positions when a play is called. He's like the coach on the floor and typically the shortest player.

(2) Shooting Guard - Basically it's the guy that dribbles the ball and shoots. He's suppose to score points, penetrate, dunk whatever it takes to put points on the board.

(3) Small Foward - He's basically just as tall as the power forward, but faster and is your scorer on the team. Rebounding is secondary, scoring and drawing fouls by penetrating is his job.

(4) Power Foward - Usually he's the second biggest guy on the court. He "powers" his way to basket (a banger) to score or grab rebounds. Fowards usually do most of the blocking of shots, defending the perimeter

(5) Center - He's the biggest guy on the court (tallest and widest normally) and he plays close to the rim. He scores short range, block shots, grabs rebounds, dunks and intimidates with hard fouls

After you kind of know the position you should know the game play

The game play is offense and defense. When one team has the ball they are on offense, then the other team is defending. The offense brings the ball up the court to score, the defense tries to stop them. Pretty simple.

There are four quarters in a game. After two quarters a half time rest period then the two other quarters are played. Each quarter last 12 minutes. If the game is tied after all four quarters are played, then they have an overtime period of 5 minutes. They keep playing overtimes until at the end of the period one team has more points then the other.

The offense brings the ball up by dribbling and passing. Normally the guards bring the ball down the court to the basket, dribbling and passing around to the other players. They have to be able to "see" the court where the other players are to get the person in the best position to score the ball. A person that shoots within the "arc" (the red arc that surrounds the goal) scores two points. If a person shoots beyond the arc the basket is worth 3 pts. If a person shoots and get fouled while taking a shot- if the shot goes in they get 2 pts plus an opportunity to make a free throw. That's the other 3 pt play. If a person get fouled while trying to make a 3 pt shot, he gets to shoot three free throws.

The team only has 24 seconds to bring the ball up the court and score. If within the 24 seconds the team shoots the ball and hits the rim without going into the basket a new 24 second clock starts. Every time a person makes a shot a new 24 second shot clock starts. If the person does not make a shot in 24 second that team loses possession of the ball.

Types of shots. You've got your basic jump shot. They just jump and shoot the ball. The dunk which is the most exciting, they jam the ball into the basket. The finger roll is when they let the ball roll off the front of the fingers. The sky hook is when they throw the ball over their head. The lay up is when they dribble up to the basket and use the box right above the rim to bank the ball in.

Types of defense. Most teams either play man to man meaning one player defends against another player or zone each player defends a position on the court rather than a player. The defender either tries to block the ball from going in or steal the ball. If the defender blocks the ball while the ball is descending down into the basket that's goal tending and the other team automatically scores 2 pts. If the defender bumps, hits, holds, or runs into a player he is commiting a foul. If the foul happens in the process of making a shot, the person fouled gets to shoot a free throw. If the foul happens away from the ball, the foul teams gets to take the ball out of bounds and start the play again. If a player acquires 6 fouls in a game, he fouls out. He cannot play any more. If a team goes into the "bonus" every foul committed against them allows them to go to the free throw line whether or not the foul was committed against a shooting player or away from the ball.

It's a lot to take in, but it's really not that hard. I took the time to explain because I was dating a guy that was addicted to basketball. I had to learn all the terms in order to keep up with the conversation.

Well, I don't want to insult you, but I'm gonna try to cover almost everything I can think of, including very basic stuff. Basketball players play on a court, not a field. The guys play with a 29.5 inch ball, while the girls play with a 28.5 inch ball. There are 5 guys on the floor at a time for each team, 2 teams of course. When somebody bounces the ball they are dribbling. If they move without dribbling and go more than a step or two, it is called a travel and the other team will receive the ball. A shot is when they throw the ball at the goal, which is ten feet high, and the backboard, glass, bankboard, whatever you want to call it, is 6 feet wide. A trey is a three point shot, which is behind the 3 point line. When guys on the bench go in it is called subbing. The players that begin the game are called starters. There is 2 guards who dribble, 2 forwards and 1 center.

I shouldn't have started answering this question... Basketball is too complex for me to write down. I hope I did help a little before I ran out of time.

Watch a Laker game. Study Kobe #24. He is the perfect teacher ... He schools everyone. Kobe knows how to score at will. His defense is as sick as his offense. He is good from the line and never cracks under pressure. Kobe is a leader and he makes everyone on his team better. The terms are easy to pick up and the game will change your life. You just have to watch the game.
