3x/4 - 5x/12 = 5
[9x - 5x]/12 = 5
4x /12 = 5
4x = 5*12
4x = 60
x = 60/4
x = 15

What's happening to the quality of teaching?
Multiply through the above by least common denominator (in this case, it's 12) ==> 12(3x/4 - 5x/12) = 12*5
9x - 5x = 60 ... solve for x.

First you want to get a common denominator, and that would be 12...so take 3x and multiply it by 3, and it's denominator by 3. You then have 9x/12-5x/12=5. Multiply through by twelve to get rid of fractions. 9x-5x=60. 9-5=4. so 4x=60. divide by 4. x=15.
