a style of dress, attitude, appearance and taste that would indicate an air of being well educated, well dressed (see Stepford wives movie or the people who hang out with Dan Akroyd on Trading Places movie w/ Eddie Murphy) and possibly well off. appearances are very, very important in this lifestyle (right car, right clothing, right neighborhood, right schools, kids have to behave a certain way in public so as not to embarrass parents, very competitive nature).

A preppy is generally an old money person from New England.
They drive cars that aren't very flashy. They like to wear Polo ,
J Crew, Lilly Pulitzer, and Lacoste. They generally go to private schools, and ivy league colleges. Preps are extremely classy.
They love pearls and pink and lime green. Preppy sports are polo, sailing, rugby, lacrosse, and soccer. (southern preps- football). In the 80s a prep handbook was published.
A common misconception is that preps are snooty and wear Abercrombie and Holister, but this is not true.

in general a preppy person is like what everyone else has been telling you, the New England preps that look like the brunette in Legally Blonde....
however on the west coast, we seem to have a different perception on preppiness. It's the whole abercrombie, pink, and you know beverly hills new richies. (not llike celebrities)
alot of people mix up trendiness with preppiness. celebrities are trendy (most of them) while those east coast old school people are preps. look up the book Private by kate brian and you'll see what preppy is, or yet, buy the book!

Hmm. All these other answers are talking about the rich people and sweaters, vest, and things like that. that's true, and if that's what you're looking for, go read every other answer. (Think about the brunette chick who stole Reese Withersoon's boyfriend in Legally Blonde if you want to know about preppy like that)

But if you're thinking about the cool people (specifically girls) in your school with the long hair, disconnected bangs, jeans that have the holes in them but still have the white strings running across, tight, fitting shirts, headbands, cute clothes, cheerleading typre girls, you're thinking my definition of preppy. It really depends where you live. Where I live, preppy is pretty, stylish, expensive clothing, but not dorky and rich expensive clothing. I'm talking Hollister, Abercrombie, American Eagle, Aeropostle.
Where I live, the preppy girls get the hot skater boys.

This is a person that dresses business casual or even business dressy for normal none work related occasions. Say for instance is someone chooses to wear a tie everyday to school where a uniform is not required. It also can describe someone who over dresses. Maybe someone wears a business style collared shirt that is tucked in to a concert, that would also be preppy. One of crucial element of preppiness is cleanliness. Such as ironing all clothes, not having any wrinkles, not wearing anything loose.

BerryMarilyn left the best answer. I just wanted to add that preppy is derived from dressing like they do at expensive prep schools, mainly in the Northeast. In the 70s it was Izod, In the 80s is was Ralph Lauren Polo, in the 90s it was Tommy Pullmyfinger and Nautica. Now I think its Hollister.

In recent years, young people have begun to use the term "preppy," often shortened to "prep" as a noun, as slang to describe those who appear clean-cut or strive to seem better off financially than others in a middle class environment. In most regions, especially amongst young people, this usage has virtually replaced the traditional meaning of the word. Used in this manner, "preppy" is often applied contrary to the term's mainstream meaning stated above, as the slang version most often describes "nouveau riche", publicly-educated people absorbed in the middle class hypermaterialistic pop culture pursuit of ostensibly quality-made goods sold at prices for those who can pay for the best and most fashionable, and are 'obsessed' with clothes and shopping. As such, teenagers often apply this slang label to popular clothing not characteristic of "prepdom" such as American Eagle, Aéropostale, Hollister Co., and Abercrombie and Fitch (prior to the original company's bankruptcy in 1977, it in fact was a prep staple). However, the "New England prep" image is still strongly associated with current use of the word. Abercrombie's clothes, for example, often reference lacrosse, rugby, and crew sports typically linked with the outdoorsy New England lifestyle. A prep, the most popular usage of this word among young people, is used to describe a person who dresses a certain way, which can be broadly characterised in two ways. First is the girls who dress in a typically 'girly' way and normally favour the colour pink. Secondly is the ones who dress, to a casual observer, in an untidy manner, but actually the outfit has been carefully put together. Big hoodies (usually sporting a university or typically preppy sport) with short skirts or skinny jeans, accesories with 'bed-head' hair and ugg boots. The individual items will most probably be designer, and easily identifiable to other preppy people. Preps also tend to use the word "like" a lot, however it is also a tendency of many other different subcultures. They watch mostly reality television programs, and generally listen to light rock, alternatives and pop.

A "preppy person" used to go to a prep school. preparation for college. They were highly motivated, confident, and sometimes crossed the line into snobishness. I was considered a "prep" in High-school, and resent the stigmatism it carries today. Because you may be a leader, not a bossy one, are motivated, confidant, may have means from family to attend college, may be good-looking, and everybodys friend, others could be jealous. Remember the "Green-eyed " monster! You are not better than others, but more blessed.

Their are many different kinds of prep like a person the preps that wear Abercrombie and and wear very colorful colors.Another prep are those mean preps that think that they are all that but they are not. Some can be snobby and rich and also think that are all that.Preps dont have to be rich.

The final prep is not exactly a prep, they are the people that go to prepatory school which is like a private school,so they can get ready for college or university.

Please don't tell me your young and someone said you were preppy. Don't listen, its a stereotype. The only thing I remember from when I was in high school was a person that was called preppy was... wearing the expensive in fashion clothing and jewelry, got really good grades, into sports or cheer leading etc., only hung out with other kids that dressed the same as they did, family had money. I don't really see anything wrong with most of it. To me it's just a name like saying someone looks like a Hick.
