My first impression is stubbornness as if it was some kind of injury or painful it would have let you know about it.
I cant imagine that cold on its own would cause what you are describing but next time try it bit of vigorous rubbing at the joint to get the circulation going and see if it improves.

pphhhh!!! My pony does the same exact thing. He is just being stubborn. Hit the back of his knee to make him bend it, hold it there for about 3 seconds then let it go. Then try picking it up again, and if he's a butt about it, hit the back of his knee again. Soon he will learn that it is more work to fight you then just give up his foot. But you know him better than any of us will, so you decide. If he usually does pull stunts then he's probly just being stubborn, and if he doesn't but was acting up, he's probly just feeling good. Strangely horses do like the cold, they are big animals and it's hard for them to cool off, he's probly just feeling his oats.

Maybe a lil bit of both. You said ice so i'm assuming its cold. If your horse has snow/ice balls in his feet, he may have felt unstable to pick up his feet and balance on the others. Also, if its cold, he may have been stiff. If your horse doesnt want to bend his leg, grab him at the knee with one hand and flex his hoof back towards his stomach with the other.

He was probably stiff, from it being so cold. If you haven't had them out in a few days, it could be from lack of exercise, and it being cold. Try walking him around to get his circulation going, if you still have a problem with it, he might have hurt himself somehow. Look over his leg and make sure he doesn't have any wounds or swollen spots where he might have banged it against something. Good luck.

Sounds a bit stiff and like he was stretching it. Usually the problem is getting the horse to extend it in a stubborn behavior, not the other way around.

I doubt he was stiff. My ponies do this when they just really don't want to be messed with today. (Ponies and quarter horses, are smart and will avoid as much work as possible.) He's most likely perfectly fine.

probably just stubborn. If you don'tknow any reason for him to be stiff besides the cold weather ( which makes some horses kinda mad anyway ) he is probably just resisting you.
