Yes, regular fish food is OK for bettas. Just make sure to give your "betta" some high protein treats such as brine shrimp, blood worms or black worms frequently. I always keep some in the freezer for treats. In the wild they are carnivores and eat live food almost exclusively.

I give my bettas Betta Min, it is 45% protein. It is a red flake that comes in a small yellow can. I believe flakes are better than pellets because they soften quicker when put in the water and there is no danger of the hard pellet blocking the digestive tract of the fish if it doesn't soften before reaching the intestine.

BTW, it is pronounced bet-tah, not bay-tah.

I feed all of my fish (tropical/Betta and goldfish) "micro granules for tropical fish" the brand is a well know commercial brand of fish food and the food is like tiny multicoloured granules of sand. Betta's like many tropicals eat insects etc and need animal protein for good health and colour. The food mentioned above has an almost identical food analysis as the highly recommended and much more expensive "Betta" foods that were on offer.
PS all my fish love the stuff.

It's not usually advised too, because beta's are colorful fish, the food you feed them helps them keep their brilliant color, as well as keep them healthy. Since each fish is different, the nutrition value of the different foods are specifically balanced for specific types of fish. Beta's are top feeders, so if you do want to feed them another type of fish food, find something that doesn't sink to the bottom quickly.

bettas can be picky eaters -- most food made for bettas is small and floating. i use hikari pellets and its easy -- you just count out three and drop them in the bowl twice a day. if he is large go for 4 but you don't want a fat betta.
