It's really impossible to rank them unless maybe you were to categorize them: Hendrix best for reinventing how electric guitar was played and sounding like he was dropped in from another planet to show us how to do it, Page best for being able to play many different styles and as a producer (just listen to how much he changed sound and style on a single album like Zeppelin IV), Clapton for his mastery of blues and a really long career, and Allman for slide guitar. Each have their strengths and I wish I could play like any of them. Ultimately, it just comes down to individual opinion, and we all know what opinions are like don't we.

My favourite guitarists are:

1. Brian May (of Queen fame), because he's done some of the most amazing riffs I've ever heard, AND he built his own guitar when he was around 17.

2. Jimi Hendrix. I'll admit, I haven't listened to much of my Electric Ladyland album yet, but what I've heard is spectacular. (And yes, I know he's a bit overrated, but that doesn't mean he's not good!)

3. Nick Drake. He was a 70's British folk singer who never got his fame in life. He plays some of my favourite songs and has true expression with complicated picking.

4. Andre Segovia OR Eric Clapton. I've only heard one or two Andre songs, but I was mind blown when I heard them. He is really skilled, as is Clapton, who has some great songs too.

1. Eric Clapton - founded and played in several successful bands, played with several groups such as the Beatles and Stones, and continues to play solo and with others such BB King and his latest album with JJ Cale is the best yet!

2. Jimi Hendrix - no one can compare to Jimi

3. Frank Zappa - set aside certain songs like Yellow Snow, and listen to his albums that feature his guitar licks and understand the man had talent that was never really recognized by pop culture

Needless to say, I rank Clapton as number 1 since he's still alive and his music matures as he ages and no one can do guitar riffs like Clapton.
Eric Clapton can take a song by other artists, such as Cocaine, and make it his own, and that is pure genius!

Fairly standard. Try some of these:

Danny Gatton
Lenny Breau
Jimmy Thackery
Greg Koch
Gary Lucas
Charlie Hunter
Some would call these guys "guitarist's guitar players"

your handle is slowhand ben and clapton aint #1? LOL, anyway, id go with taht list for technicaly ability except for allman, never was that impressed with him. i would also consider mark knopfler and david gilmour. i personally like Page the best but i think Jimi is the better player, and i do think clapton has been more consistent then Page has over the years: longer career with quality work, Page hasnt done much since zep, but the zep stuff is amazing

Yeah, nice selection, though I'm not so sure about Duane. There's another guy I like a lot, used to play guitar with Billy Idol - White Wedding, etc. What is his name?

Jimi Hendrix has got to be number one. I like Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to, and the guitarist from Dragonforce. You should check him out.

: )
