Usually nothing, if it was an instant mistake. If you get the car started using the correct polarity with the cables check your volt meter. It should read 13.5 - 14 volts. If your car does not have a volt meter check your battery across the terminals with a hand held volt meter. With the motor running you should be reading the same voltage as above. If your not reading a minimum of 12.75 volts your alternator needs repair. Usually a diode is bad. A good quality starter, alternator, generator repair shop can fix it for you. If you'd rather pick up a re-manufactured alternator, pick one up at an Auto parts store that carries Cardone re manufactured parts. Their plant is located near Philadelphia PA.. They've been in business over fifty yrs.

Assuming you made the identical switch on the other vehicle NOTHING will happen, it will jump start as usual. If, however, you reversed the cables on one car and not on the other, the car will not jump (best case scenario) or worse you could short out the batteries to both cars or worse yet the battery(s) could explode.

Well first off it will spark like craze. If the battery you are trying to jump is completely dead it will not turn the starter. In the worse case you will blow the main fuse, and if it is really bad you can fry the cars computer( not likly but has happoned).

I did this once. I got HUGE sparks from the battery terminal of the second car when I made the last connection, and it sprayed drops of molten lead all over the engine bay. No lie.

So... no matter what anybody else says they THINK will happen, that's what REALLY happens, cause I freaking DID this. :-)

As my son once told me, "Wow, Dad, you sure learned a lot of things the hard way."

If it is fuel injected it can cause problems to your computer that controls the air/fuel mixture and your ignition spark control. This will cost a lot of money to replace. Parts and labour that is.
