Bringing your engine to operating temps is a good thing before applying stress to the drivetrain etc.

Get ALL the fluids and lubricants at or close to operating optimums. That way they flow as intended and do their job.

It may cost a few bucks in gas over the winter, but it makes sense to bring all fluids to operating temp before stressing the engine and drivetrain components.

It is adviseble to warm up your vehicle when it is cold. But do it in neutral with the park brake on. This warms up your tranny fluid if it is an automatic. This is the only time the pump in your tranny works moving the fluid throughout the transmission. Also it prevents damage to your internal engine parts as the oil warms up to lubricate all the internal engine parts such as bearings on your crankshaft and cam. Also good for your lifters and rocker arms.

Now it is more for your comfort and not about protecting the car. New cars do not need excessive warming, drive your car slowly and it warms up quickly.
