I'm wondering if anyone knows of any national or local (PA) organizations or funding sources that would assist in making our home handicap accessible for our son? Our insurance is great, and covers his medical care, but they feel that home modifications are not medically necessary. We're not considered 'low' income, but are living paycheck to paycheck, so spending thousands on widening doorways, changing the bathroom so that we can actually turn around with him in our arms, and installing a ceiling lift because he's getting too heavy to lift is not an option for us. As it is, we can't even fit his wheelchair in his bedroom. I've already looked into all the Make A Wish type organizations, they are not willing to help with home modifications either. Any suggestions???

I am in New Jersey and work for the state for the disabled. We have funds in NJ, under the state, that assists with making home modifications. Check with your state under the Human Services Department. If you are registered already, the state should be able to help you. But, I don't recall Pennsylvania having much money for human services as in NJ. If the Human Services cannot help, then maybe they can direct you to a source that can assist you with funding. You may also want to try and call your state representative if nothing else is working. Developmental Disabilities Council is another place you may want to call. I don't what other source. BTW, if you are not registered with the state, you may want to do so and they will assign you a case manager who can work with you in getting you the services you need. Good luck.
