As many mentioned, he had Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's affects the brain and is typically not the cause of death. I believe the actual cause was attributed to pneumonia attributed to Alzheimer's.
Kudos to the previous answerer, yes regardless your opinion of President Reagan's policy he deserves respect in his death. Nancy should aslo be appluded as you will not find many couples that today display so much love and til the end. Mrs. Reagan had to watch her "Dear Ronnie" slip away into a void of nothing, but she admirablly stood there by his side to the very end. The same can be said of President & Mrs. Ford's relationship.

He suffered from Advanced Alzheimer's disease.

By the end he didn't even know or recognize his beloved wife, his kids, and did not even remember having been President of the USA.

My father passed of Alzheimer's a year ago at Christmastime, and I can tell you it is a death no one deserves. Whether you agreed with his politics or not, please respect his death and the tragedy it represents for many many others who also care for Alzheimer's patients.
