Price vs. Performance, should I get an X-Fi, or should I save up a bit more and get a nice pair of surround speakers?

I do want the Logitech Z-5300E 5.1's, because they seem to be excellent speakers for the performance, judging by the reviews on Newegg.

Thanks.

I'd save up. That way if you find a better deal, you could buy those.

After CES, prices tend to drop around Febuary.

I have an X-Fi sound card/module, and there's a setting where I can listen to a 4.0 (quadraphonic) downmix, so two stereos with a total of four speakers would give me something that resembles surround sound. I usually watch DVDs with 2.0 (stereo) sound since I haven't hooked up an additional stereo to power a set of rear speakers, but it's nice to know I could. If you already have more than one stereo, you might consider using two for 4.0 sound.

I took out the lower DVD-ROM drive to make room for the X-Fi controls, and I didn't realize when I bought it that I would need to. An external Audigy may be a good choice if you have only one CD/DVD drive with no place for a second internal one.

I agree with the above.
Having a set of Z-5300 with onboard audio, or a X-Fi with cheap speakers is pointless.

They are great speakers played in combo with the X-Fi.
The Z-5300's (or any 5.1, 7.1) aren’t meant for onboard audio, get either one 1st and later on get the other later one.
I should know.... I’m a proud owner of both. :)
