No, they are not paid. Some people will do anything for a portion of their 15 minutes of fame...even make fools of them selves. Then there are the other people who just don't have a clue about their own limitations :( The thing is that, like all reality shows, the actual things you see on tv are edited (sometimes VERY edited) clips of things people say and do. So, something that is said/meant/done one way can come off seeming entirely different in the final cut. I don't think you could pay me enough to be on a reality show.

No. They have thousands of people try out in front of the producers. They choose a combination of good singers and unusual acts that would be entertaining on the TV show. Those people then move up to the step you see on TV. Out of thousands, only about one or two hundred are actually seen by Simon and the other panelists.
If you read the contract it gives the show rights to do almost anything including making fools of contestants. You have no right to do anything about it. Those people actually think they are good.

No. I think it's like part of a line in "Fame". "You'll remember my name." To do that, they have to DO something memorable--especially if some of those people can't hit the side of a barn with a pitch pipe. I have my moments, as we all do, but I CAN carry a tune (just to let ya know I don't think I'm perfect).

I don't think they have to get paid. A lot of people will act like complete idiots just to get on TV.
There is no way most of those people think they are good singers.

They are not paid, why would they pay someone good money just so that they could cry, if they were that good of actors/actresses why arent they ALREADY in hollywood?

Nope some of them think they can sing n suck but some know they suck n try to become famous by doing that you know what i mean for attention

No, they just want to be put on tv for looking stupid, even knowing they can't sing.
Most do it for a joke.
Others, really get their dreams crushed.
