Well, you do -- the NY Jets.

It's marketing that prevents them from having New Jersey in the name, though sometimes you do see NY/NJ to reflect the broader metropolitan area.

They play in East Rutherford NJ, so call them what you like...

New Jersey does have a football team. They are the New York Giants and the New York Jets. They both play in Giant Stadium, which is in East Rutherford NJ. The reason they don't have NJ in front of there name is when the teams left New York, they made a deal with the state of NJ. The deal allow the teams to keep NY in front of ther name. It just goes to show you what a state will do to get a football team

Many states in the US don't have football teams. Like Virginia, Oregan, Montana, Maine, just to name a few. Besides Jets are centered in New Jersey

They tried it during the old USFL days.

The New Jersey Generals.

None of those teams attracted enough audience to provide a competitive product and the league went under.

Interestingly, the NFL was found to have used unfair practices to help run the USFL out of business, and a court awarded the USFL a total of $3.00 in damages.

Technically they do have two if you are speaking about the NFL. Jets and Giants may have New York in their names but Jersey is where they play their games. Just thinking about it, I wonder where the players and coaches pay their state income taxes at.

Technically, it is the New Jersey Jets, not the the New York Jets. But New Jersey plays in New York, so they are referred to as the New York Jets.
