I think that kids have more demands on them today than say when I was in high school 15 years ago. Today's students are keeping up with challenging curriculums and high stakes testing. Sure, the kids have online access, but the depth of the assignments that teachers are now requiring of the students still requires the student to apply concepts at a level that requires application and actually knowing the concept, not just memory of basic facts...
In Texas - where I am a 9th grade teacher - students are required to complete major assignments in order to be successful at mastery of say "Physics and Chemistry." Reading a book on "The Odyssey" requires actual connection of the epic poem... the online resources of the web doesn't teach analysis and synthesis of information.

Yes, but the volume of homework seems to be increasing. I don't know if teachers are expecting more or if there's more BS during the day so that school work can't get done during the day.
Also the computer is a huge distraction - I'm guessing it's about 5 minutes of work, then check MySpace, then get an IM from a friend, then go back to work, then check out something else.....

IN MY OPINION KIDS NOWADAYS DO NOT HAVE IT EASIER IN TERMS OF HOMEWORK. SOME REASONS BEHIND MY DECISION ARE THAT, FIRSTLY THE QUESTIONS ARE A LOT MORE DIFFICULT TO COMPREHEND AND THE CURRICULUM HAS BEEN INCREASED SINCE MOST PARENTS AND AUNTS AND UNCLES WERE IN SCHOOL. A PARENT OR ELDER CANNOT OFFER AN OPINION TO THIS QUESTION BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW THE CURRENT RATE OF ACCCELERATION OF THE WORK GIVEN NOW COMPARED TO WHEN THEY WENT TO SCHOOL. HALF THE MATHEMATICS THAT CHILDREN LEARN IN MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL, THEIR PARENTS AND ELDERS HAVE NEVER HEARD OF. JUST BECAUSE OF THE GREAT TECHNOLOGY WE KNOW AS COMPUTERS HAVE BEEN INVENTED DOES NOT MEAN THAT KIDS HAVE IT EASIER IN TERMS OF HOMEWORK. aLSO AS YOU WELL KNOW ANSWERS AND SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS THAT STUDENTS FIND ONLINE MAY NOT ALWAYS BE ACCURATE. PLUS IF THEY ARE CHEATING BY GETTING THE ANSWERS OFF LINE THEN THEY WILL NEVER LEARN THE CONCEPT THAT IS NEEDED TO TAKE THE STANDARD IZED TESTS OVER THE MATERIAL. PEOPLE WHO CHEAT BY COPYING ANSWERS FROM OTHER SOURCES OTHER THAN THEIR OWN MINDS WILL NEVER MAKE IT IN LIFE AND ARE DISGRACES TO THOSE OF US WHO TRY OUR HARDEST TO LEARN THE CONCEPTS GIVEN OUT BY THE MATERIAL

No. the amount of homework and difficulty varies widely with where you live and what school system you belong to. Homework probably has gotten a little easier from online resources.

Undoubtedly. First the answers are on the web, second the questions are easier. However, it is now harded to distinguish the bright pupils from the thick ones. Good for dunces, bad for booksmarts.

Yes, I do.

As a teacher, we were restricted on the amount of homework we were permitted to assign, whether they finished their classwork or not.

Typically the kids who did it scored higher than the ones who didn't.

Of course things are more easy now for most of us, but remember too that with this new facilities there are some dangers that come with it specially for our children without supervision.
