You are right! football and hockey are brutally tough sports. I played both as a youth, and if I may say was very good at them. I do believe that Hockey is probably a more physically demanding sport. If you are in good hockey shape you can kick a ss in almost any other sport. Soccer is not a sport, unless you're a 9 or ten year old little girl.

The "toughest" sport is not an easy thing to determine. There are many factors. These include endurance, strength, power, flexibilty, coordination, and amount of competition. Any sport can be very tough, because people are trying to push the limits.
I say [American] football.
First off, though, there will be people who suggest rugby, which like football and done without any pads. That makes it tougher. However, many more people play football than rugby, so on the pro level, being a top football player means you have to overcome some serious competition, while rugby you can be a top player more easily since there isn't as much competition.
You can also think about wrestling, which is almost automatically tougher than running. Pretend you're in a marathon, but instead of pacing well to finish a fast time, you're measured on how long you stay in the lead- everybody has to fight and sprint to stay in front the longest. That's wrestling- if you pace yourself, you lose; you have to struggle to stay ahead of someone who's already struggling to beat you.
However, wrestling doesn't have as much competition as football.
Football players are strong, we all know that. But they can also handle pretty considerable endurance; picture a 250 pound guy running a 5:15 mile. Also have to turn on a dime to make plays- be very agile. Catching a football at the speed at which it's passed isn't easy, especially when you're running faster than 99 out of 100 people can. And of course, you can get tackled a ton of times- this takes toughness. (Weightlifters and Olympic shot putters are stronger than football players but are not as tough- there's no contact.)
Any sport can be tough, but I'd give football a slight edge.

I happen to think that its nascar. The drivers work out constantly, they have a 6 day work week, sometimes 7 for 11 months out of the year. They bang into walls going 200 mph, and walk away with out a scratch, probably because they are impecable athletes. There is no other sport that requires that kind of time and dedication for 11 months out of the year. No other athlete, is putting their life on the line like they do. Most athletes play 4 quarters, or 9 innings, and they are done, they do not have the stamina that a nascar driver has. Hockey players knock each other around with a stick, does that make them tough? Sure it does, but not as tough as a nascar drivers who knock each other around in cars going 200mph. So yeah, Its a NASCAR DRIVER

Gymnastics, because of the immense skill, strength, coordination and flexibility it requires. There are literally thousands of skills you have to progress through; each builds on the other so if you learn a basic move wrong, it can impact everything else. And to be really good, you have to train 4-6 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. If that isn't tough I don't know what is!
