The Bible, definitely!

Others include the Little House on the Prairie series, the Chronicles of Narnia, the Wizard of Oz books, anything by Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss (the ORIGINAL books!); basically anything published before the mid-90's. Make sure they are reading real stuff, not modern, trendy garbage. The old things will make 'em smarter (have them listen to soft Mozart while you are reading together too!)

I have always like Charlotte's Web and The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever. I feel that each of these books shows how choices that are made impact the lives of others. And about a year ago I was introduced to a book Titled Lily's Purple Plastic Purse you might find that one enjoyable as well.

I think you can't go far wrong with any of Robert Louis Stephenson's work. Start with "A Child's Garden of Verses." Then, there is The Swiss Family Robinson, and Heidi. These give some insight into other ways of life.

I agree. The Bible is the best one!
You didn't say the age of the child. My kids loved all of the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. You learn so much about history too. Also good are all of the Ann of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery and anything by Luisa May Alcott.
Happy reading!
