I spent my so-called career in newspaper editing and writing. wrote lots of headlines since 1967. don't recall the precise headlines around the country but it wasn't war, murder or recession or assassinations. i would say the biggest impact on the us happened when one day it was announced school busing was ordered immediately to begin the desegration process. that was the one. not 911 or vietnam or iraq. it was a really intense moment in the newsrooms across this country no matter how you felt about it. everybody just seemed to know the world moved at that point. everybody with education knew this was gonna really change everything about american society and the subcultures. i think it was the biggest change yet though not nearly so splashy as kennedy being shot, and mlk and the rest. not the watergate scandel. nothing since the end of ww2 was as big. average joes didn't realize it at the time. mlk shooting was big but it passed. he was a big influence with his nonviolence approach, but education was and is the key to the promised land he talked about. i am retired with a bad ticker and am not lying.

I have to admit I would have never of thought that the passing of Johnny Carson, which was in the headlines, would have had such an impact on me.

I really felt as if I had just lost a dear friend. And felt that the world just lost something special.

Weird, but he had a way of no matter what was going on in the world, of making you feel that things were okay and the world was a good place.

The Tonight Show with Johnny and Ed along with guests such as George Gobal, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart and the list is endless, was like ending the day with a very good time party.

What a way to end the day, laughing.

to be honost with you i don't take too seriously what the headlines have to say because their not always fact.but the one thing that has profoundly affected me the most was the sadam hanging.how they mocked him during his final moments on this earth.he may have done a lot of unspeakable things in his life but when it comes to death, thats should be private between him and god.no matter what he has done in the past he still deserved to go out with some of his dignity.i'm sure if everyone put themselves in his shoes they would want the same thing.after all when the end comes for all of us our didnity is all we have left.and i won't single out sadam, that goes for anyone thats about to be put to death. i hope you will agree with me on this.thanks for listening. pete

One about twelve years ago about a family who were sitting eating their car at a fast food restaurant. They were celebrating the father's promotion in his dead-end job. A drunk driver coming down the road jumped the median and slammed into the family's car, killing the whole family.

But I don't remember the headline.

21 July, 1969. "The Eagle has Landed" The high-water mark of the American spirit--the first landing on the Moon.

It's sad weve spent the last 38 years turning our back on our own heritage.
