It means that you feel powerless, or your voice is not being heard. See sources, the last two links are too dreammoods.com. One is a direct link to what being silent means, and the other is just a link to the main page to you can search around and interpret any of your dreams.

Don't listen to what that one guy is saying about comotose affect or poor blood circulation or WTH ever, there is a disorder like that, but it's called sleep paralysis, which can be a symptom of necrolepsy or just means you haven't been getting enough sleep. It isn't caused by poor blood circulation. When you enter REM sleep, there is a mechanism in your body that paralyzes you so you don't thrash around or act out what you are dreaming (some people don't have this and will act out a dream or sleepwalk, and thats called parasomnia I believe), and sometimes if you don't get enough REM sleep you will wake up and this mechanism will not be off for a few seconds, resulting in paralysis upon waking. Look it up on Wikipedia (sources). I am almost 100% sure that you know that you are dreaming, but I just wanted to set that straight.

I had a dream like this where I couldn't speak, yell, and I think I had a hard time breathing. I was actually sleeping on the couch and in the dream I was in the same position I fell asleep in. I often wondered that myself, although I don't pay too much attention to dreams. I'm going to see if anyone else might know the answer to this one because I am curious myself.

Actually, that wasnt a dream. Most people have experinced what ive have called the comotose effect. It basically happens like this: You go to sleep(a deep sleep) when you wake up you cant move or speak. Ive spoke to people about this and ive heard it is because of bad blood circulation. Dont take me wholeheartly, but it might be caused by the way you sleep. Do you lay on your arm when you sleep? Do you sleep awkwardly? Do you eat right? All of these could be factors. Iam not a doctor, but have spoken to people about this effect when you sleep. The most common response is that it is bad blood circulation. Go to www.webmd.com to find out more...

This has happened to me many times... I would wake myself up, trying so hard to get words out that I'd be yelling nearly, in this weird howling voice... lol It actually scared me the first time until I realized it was me making the sound. In those dreams I was trying to stop something from happening, or stop someone from hurting me or in one stop someone from running away... I took it to mean I was feeling powerless.

Hunny,
It means that in at least some aspects of your life, you feel as if you are not being heard; as though what you have to say is of no value. It could also represent the fear you have of being truthful.

This can mean that you have something you want to express, but it is still largely unconscious, or is held back through uncertainty

It means that you feel that whatever you are saying is not being heard or listened to. You are dis-empowered, disenfranchised.
You need to find or raise your voice.
