I mean seriously, instead of taking the time to open a book or generally do some genuine research we just type a question into the magic box and wait for people to answer it.

I'm thinking about the science section in particular, some of the questions on there are clearly from exams or assignements and from people too lazy to work things out for themselves. It goes beyond externalizing your doubts and it becomes SOLVE MY PROBLEM NOW!

I remember reading a guidelines document for a forum, I think it was on C++ or something, and it said at some point that the forum's golden rule was that you first try to solve the problem yourslef and then ask questions based on the doubts that emerged after you hit a roadblock. I don't see that happening around here...

In some cases, yes. I think some people don't want to do their homework so they get someone else to do it for them. But, also it is a great place for people who have no one else to ask (talk to) to get help. Plus it is anonymous. So there is no embarrassment factor. If you are having problems in life or on homework you don't have to worry about someone thinking that you are stupid because they can not see you.
Plus you can usually tell who needs and help and who does not want to do their homework. Do not answer the latter if you are concerned.

Good point. Many people rely on internet sites, chat rooms, Yahoo! answers, etc... to find out answers. Sometimes these aren't always reliable or accurate.
For example, I researched Cyclone Tracy (via internet and books) and got four different answers to how many people died that day and how long the eye lasted. The internet had a wider range of lives/times. These could've been anecdotal or just made up.
Also, if I find a question that sparks my intrest, I open a book (or reliable internet site) and research the question.
Most people take the answers from Yahoo! Answers as gospel, that they are always right. This may lead people into a false sense of security and over-rely on chat-room (or similarly based) answers.

Call me odd, but I'd prefer books.

I agree. Many people just seem to be posting their homework here, or worse, their exams. I try not to answer those, or just leave hints if no one is helping. I think the difference is that yahoo won't block users that are annoying, insulting, or infantile about questions. Well, they might get rid of their account, but they are back 5 min later with a new one. It's pretty disapointing, most of the time.

Just like in anything in this life, one must take personal responsibility for one's action. We assume that people only post their questions when they really need help, and had tried solving the problems themselves; now, if this is not the case, then, it is their personal choice and whatever the consequences later, they must be ready to accept them.
