CNN (and pretty much all other media) seems to be focusing on the additional troops in Iraq, but when I first saw that speech I took it differently.

To me it seemed like Bush was saying, "Cooperate now or we're outta there." The more troops is just so we can say we gave it our all and reduce our guilt for causing the mess.

Did anyone else get the same impression?

I have read people who interpreted things the way you did. And about a year ago, that is what I expected Bush to do.

But no, I don't think that's Bush's plan. But I do think the result of his plan will be to set things up so that when we have to leave Iraq and abandon it, it will be when someone else (probably a Dem) is President, so that Bush can say to himself "It's not my fault we left."

People don't or won't understand that to withdraw, we will still need to send troops to provide security to get our military, equipment and civilian contractors out. Probably more than twenty thousand will be needed.

I got the impression that he is planning on attacking Iran. He is sending aircraft carriers to the gulf and Patriot missile systems to the Iraq/Iran border. He wants to start WW III.
