-x^2-y^2 which is basically the same as -(xy)^2 with the negative sign distributed throughout.

First: rewrite the expression without the exponent...

- (xy)(xy)

Sec: multiply both expressions...

- (x^2y^2)

Third: eliminate the parenthesis > distribute the negative sign with the term...

-x^2y^2

-(xy)^2 = - x^2y^2

If the problem were (-xy)^2 the answer would be x^2y^2
