Is there a way i can find it out or get it without calling him.....i'm currently running windows 2000 and wanted to upgrade

Unfortunately, you have a pirated version of Windows XP. Even if you do get a serial number that will work for the version that you have, more than likely you will not have the ability to upgrade to the Service pack 2 that you will eventually need in order to keep your computer updated and secure. If you are persistent with obtaining a serial number for Windows XP, you can try doing a Google search for Windows XP Serial. Many sites will come up with links to finding the serial number, but I should inform you that you will need to run a complete scan using a spyware/malware application once you have found your serial number.

The actual CD does NOT contain the cd key for the software unless he burned it onto the cd.
The other part I must say is that windows 2000 is a very solid OS and windows xp can be bought for right around a 100ish dollars.
With the WGA software activated if the cd he gave you is not valid you will not be able to activate nor will you get the security updates to make sure your computer is safe and secure.

it won't work for long even if you do get it on to your system. there is a simple keyfinder program that gives you the key to a windows and office program. a simple web search using keyfinder, windows, will get you on course to finding it. also, the code probbly won't be validated by microsoft since it probably has already been registered. windows programs require a specific code for each computer. you may be able to buy a key for it through ms, but unless it is a known illegal copy, you probably won't be able to buy one through ms. there are crack programs to provide an oroginal software code on the computer, but most have been found out and when you go to ms for updates, you can't get them since the code will not be validated by ms. you can try, but unless you can get the baseline analyzer program, a microsoft it pro program which gives the update without going through the ms vaidation process, you will not be able to get security updates of any kind. the analyzer requires a validation to get it, so you have to get it from someone with a valid code. don't download it using 2000 unless it is original software, and then burn it to a cd direct from ms instead of running it so you can install it after you load the later windows cause if you do, it will be lost when you install the new version. back up everything to disks and you can put them back after you install a later os.

Now, if you don't like to have to pay for an OS, go and download an ISO image of a Linux distribution. Install it and hold on for the OS ride of your life.
