It's only recently you needed a degree to get work in that field.
The degree might help get work with a publisher, or in advertising. Most successful freelancers (and that's a big portion of the field) never really need to prove certification.
In the long run, more important than the degree will be gathering a stable of clients. I know from long personal experience that what people look for is previous successful work. It sounds like a catch 22, and it's pretty rough at first, but you need to get some work done before you can really earn enough in the field.
Pitch your talents everywhere and be sure to stay up to date with the relevant software.
It's an oversaturated market, but there is lot's of work out there.

Many large corporations have their own marketing departments which need graphic designers. They normally pay pretty well and benefits package would be nice as well.
Go to Monster and type in graphic design. That should give you a really good list of the types of jobs that graphic designers hold.

I have a degree in graphic design and a certificate in photography.
I have worked in some great sign shops, companies that produce incentive catalogs for employees. I have designed backstage passes for concerts. I also work freelance and teach art classes now. Life is what you make it. If you chose to make it great, it will be. Love what you do and it pays off!

You could make a graphic novel from this story and sell it at cost to make your skills obvious to people you choose to work with: Both daughters, Mayella and Scout, lost their mother so what if they swap fathers for a week? Both daughter characters lost Mom In Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird" both the Scout character and Mayella character lost their Mom. Which one had any nurturing? Which one had a large wardrobe and servant to do housework? How would the Mayella character develop if Atticus was the father of that family? How would the Scout character develop if Bob Ewell was to swap positions for only 40 days, or even a week? What are your thoughts on this?

My friend used her degree right of college to work at an upscale magazine. Entry level positions do not pay the greatest but remember to consider it a step in building a career ladder.
