The problem with the thumbs is that it could be easily abused with many downs for no real reason

The current problem is that there is no way to express dissatisfaction with an answer or question, short of a violation notice

I hate them. I surmise the dark side was abusing the thumbs down, but they ruin EVERYTHING I LIKE!!! Phooey. Rats.
Dog Pooky. Now I'm depressed again-----thought I was over this star thing---------it s****. Whew! Now I feel much better.

Yeah, I'm not sure what taking away our ability to show our dislike for a question is supposed to accomplish, nor do I see why we should care who gave the stars.

I'm trying to figure out why they took away our ability to downrate bad questions, but let us still uprate or downrate particular answers.

did you read the blog about why they did it?
they said it was to pick the homepage questions that they show
i say we abuse that and pick the stupidest questions to put up there
