Energy is ALWAYS required,in order to do useful work. One of the fundamental laws of physics, is that no process can be 100% energy efficient. That is, all physical processes require a net loss of energy which is given off as heat.

In practice, most processes are far less than 100% efficient. Gasoline engines, for example, are on average only around 10-15% efficient, and when used to drive a car, are even less efficient. That means that less than one tenth of every gallon of gasoline, actually goes into moving the car. Another interesting fact is that the production of gasoline itself is rather inefficient, as it takes more than two and a half gallons of crude oil in order to produce one gallon of gasoline.

Energy usage is a controversial issue in today's world, as most of our energy comes from nonrenewable fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal, and gas. Worse, the burning of such fuels produces a net release of carbon dioxide, which is causing the average temperature of the planet to increase. This is the so called "Global Warming."
