nope you will have to use the restore discs that came with your laptop and reinstall everything. If you don't have the CDs you might have to buy a copy (don't get vista its trash and won't work with an older laptop anyway, NO matter what any snake idiot in a store says Windows Vista is no good). When you install the new hard drive you will get an error that no OS exists or a disk error type message, you will need to have the restore disc put into the CD drive then restart your computer and do the setup. It's posible that the company that makes your laptop included a windows disc instead of a restore disc.

Laptops come in two fashions: with the operative system embedded in the hd (part of the hard disk contains the equivalent of the Windows XP CD) and without.
The main difference is that if you have the operative system preinstalled in the HD probably your laptop does not come with with the Windows XP cd.
In any case, if you buy a new hd you will need a cd where to install from. The procedure is quite simple, after installing the new hd, start the computer, insert the cd and follow the instructions.
If you have valuable data in your old hd and want to try recovering them after installing windows xp on the new hd, buy an external usb case. You can get them for cheap on ebay.
Just insert the old hd in the case, plug it to the usb port and, if it s not too damaged, you will be able to see the data in it like it was a cd. Browse them to find what you want recover and try and copy it to your new hd (ex: in documents).
If the hd is too damaged you might not be able to save some files or the hd might not be recognized. In that case there are programs to try and savage the hd, che ck on the internet for 'files recovery'. If you have important data you want to save, it is worth a shot.
Hope this helps.

No.

Windows like everything else loads from the hard drive. You will need to reload ALL your software not just windows. This isn't a problem as you should have the original CDs right?, its just a chore. The real loss is the things that YOU created, document, pictures saved games etc... I guess that you never saved them anywhere else. It is possible to slave the old disk from the new one and use specialist software to possibly salvage files. This takes more than basic knowledge which you obviously don't have (or you would not ask this question). If you need to get things of the old disk then get face to face help.

It depends on if windows is pre-loaded on the new harddrive. It will likely come blank and formatted. You'll need a Windows XP (or Vista) install CD Rom to install windows and then reinstall all of your old software and backup files.
You can likely still recover data from the old HD if you use a bootable DOS disk and have a means to copy to an external HD. Lot of work ahead.

Windows will start up "normal" but it will be a new copy of Windows! So I hope you or your technician will be able to get copies of your current precious data files (photos, documents, private information, etc.) off the problem hard drive because all will have to be re-installed on the new hard drive!

Not unless you install Windows onto your new hard drive (you will need your Windows install CDs) or find some way of cloning your existing drive to your new one. If you do a fresh install of Windows on your new drive, you'll have to re-install all of your applications and find some way of copying over your data files from your old drive.

If you don't know the answer to this question, you really shouldn't be messing with hard drives and things. you could total wipe your laptop.
I would take it to a professtional
