You don't need a lawyer to respond to divorce papers, but it is well worth at least an initial consultation. Also, paperwork is a real pain in the rear end and it might be worth it to have someone to just do the paperwork. Also, if the soon to be, insignificant other has a lawyer, better safe….

You should be able to read the papers by yourself, unless they are too complicated with too many clauses. If that is the case, then have a lawyer go through them so that you know what you are agreeing to.
